The Web proves vividly that it can be a small world after all. Want to get back in touch with your first kiss from high school? Type in their full name at ZabaSearch.com, and you might instantly return a list of their addresses from college to the present day. What if you'd like to double-check the social security number of a potential hire--or get records for their cell phone or unlisted landline? A crop of competing Web sites promises to dig up that data for you--to the delight of any stalker with a few hundred dollars to spare. The Electronic Privacy Information Center, among other groups, hopes that the FTC will investigate the practices of online detectives to keep data out of criminals' hands.
