Today the Wall Street Journal asks: "Corporate Social Concerns: Are They Good Citizenship,Or a Rip-Off for Investors?" Bigwigs from GE, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and the Rainforest Action Network answer. You can chime in, too.
Ilyse Hogue from the Rainforest Action Network has this bright point:
Arguing against responsibility is a sign of failed imagination. We believe in an economic system where all players have incentives to consider how their decisions affect the true wealth of their customers and stakeholders. People are desperate for a definition of wealth that expands to centralize the health of individuals and communities.
A related WSJ online reader poll asked, "How important should social concerns be to a company?" Of the 1794 respondents so far, 44% said somewhat, 34% said very, and 22% said not at all.
