If you're scared silly that the bird flu will depopulate the planet this winter, but you don't want to wear your fear in the form of a flimsy cloth mask circa the 2003 SARS scare (left), here comes the NanoMask (right) to save your day.
This streamlined germ-blocker comes in five cotton candy colors, kind of like the classic iPod. At $20 a pop, the nanotechnologically-crafted faceguard includes a shell and a disposable filter designed to trap germ-filled moisture droplets without getting in the way of your glasses. The .027 micron filters supposedly block Ebola, Hepatitis B, Herpes, Small Pox, HIV, SARS, TB, anthrax, pneumonia, encephalitis--oh my! However, it won't save you from bacteriophobia, verminophobia, anuptaphobia, leukophobia, or wiccaphobia. What a wonderful holiday--or Halloween--gift to warm the hypochondriac hearts of your family members.
I'm asking some scientists what they might guess about the effectiveness of the NanoMask, and will update on that later. Studies are mixed over whether those throwaway cloth N95 masks work to block airborne diseases or not. One problem with those disposables is their failure to seal the area around the face, but the NanoMask brags about a custom fit.
When
your dry NanoMask-wearing mouth gets thirsty from an overindulgence in Clif Bars while you're holed up in some hand-dug, post-apocalyptic underground shelter, check out these nanotech water filters. (NanoMask via everybody's favorite, BoingBoing—as well as ABC News)

I like how it's candy colors and not blacks and reds and browns. Guess they want to stay cheerful.

Couldn't you just go to the hardware store and pick up a dust mask?
People will buy anything. You have to give it to marketers though. They know how to take advantage of the social climate.
